Tips for grazing during warm weather
With the current warm weather set to continue, Kieran Mailey writing in the Irish Farmers Journal has advice for grazing during warm weather
👉Water consumption will increase in hot weather so make sure water troughs are fit for purpose and cattle have access to enough water👉If possible, graze paddocks with trees or hedgerows to provide shade during warm spells to help avoid heat stress in young calves that struggle to regulate body temperature
👉Be mindful of fly activity, maiden and in-calf heifers may benefit fly prevention
👉Avoid fertiliser application as there is no rain forecast in the next few days and without moisture will have little impact on grass growth
👉It is also advised to avoid topping, with longer dry spells regrowth after topping will be slow and could cause a grazing shortage
New tagging scheme
A first of its kind genotype cattle tagging scheme will open for farmer applications later this month.
The five-year scheme will target 800,000 cattle in year one, all calves born to genotyped cows will need to be genotype-tagged in the four years that follow. Taking part in the scheme will cost €480 for a 20-cow suckler herd and €2,160 for a 90-cow dairy herd over the course of the scheme.
